PEIL The senior footballers added another 2 points to their Division 1 buoyancy aid with a 4 point, 2-10 to 1-9, victory over Dunlavin in Dunlavin on Sunday. A critical factor in the Eire Og win was the availability of the county players Darren Hayden, Stephen Chester Kelly, Sam Thompson and Daniel Woods. Home advantage seems to have played a large part in Dunlavins performance as Greystones had won much more easily in the corresponding game in the Mill Road. A very enjoyable game of football in which Matthew McGuire, Chester and Jamie McDonald were particularly prominent.

FEILE: Our u-14 footballers, as winners of the County Feile, will be representing Cill Maintain in Feile Peil na nGael which takes place between 24thand 26th June. This involves their travelling to Killarney where they will be hosted by local families. This is quite an expensive enterprise which unfortunately cannot be funded directly from the clubs financial resources so management and players have set up a number of fund-raising schemes which include a Tesco bag pack on 10th and 11th June and a Music Night in the Glen of the Downs Golf Club on 17thJune. They are looking for your support ta se tuillte acu (they deserve it).

PEIL nag CAILINI The u-14 girls entertained their counterparts from Newtown in the league last Thursday evening. The teams had played each other previously in a practice game which had proven to be very competitive so the anticipation was that the hosts would have to be at their best to win. As it turned out various circumstances had resulted in the visitors having to field an understrength team so Eire Og had an unexpectedly facile win. The Clocha Liatha girls are well aware that the match was not a true measure of the Newtown teams strength and that they will be a totally different proposition in the return game and in the championship. A very satisfactory feature of the match from the Eire Og point of view was the fact that 11 different players contributed to the score. At the break Ciara McDonnell changed role from goalie to full-forward and bagged 2 goals. It is noteworthy also that 3 of the team, Siobhan Darcy, Eva Sterritt and Jayne Merren play at u-12.

UNDER 14 HURLING: (Eire Og/Kilcoole) played their third match of the season on Wednesday night in Greystones against another amalgamated team – Avondale/Arklow Rocks. It was an excellent game between two evenly matched sides and it was nip and tuck from first whistle to last. Unfortunately, a late flurry of points from Avondale/Arklow had them in front by 3 points at full time, on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-14. Our squad on the night was : Colm Shortt, despite his reluctance to take on the goalkeeping duties, had an excellent game between the posts. Neil Brown, Sean McCormack and Thade Shanahan (0-01) were outstanding at full back, corner back and centre back respectively, and they received great support in defence from Ollie Newsome, Eoin Byrne, Michael Gray and Charlie Traynor.

Midfielders Joe Prendergast & Cillian Keane (1-00) worked tirelessly against their opposite numbers. Cillian scored an excellent goal. He soloed the sliothar from midfield and powered it to the net from 15 metres. Luke Dorgan put in his best performance of the year, scoring 1-07. Daniel Healy, Aaron Keddy, Shane Collins, Fionn Mansfield and Ben O’ Neill all put in a great effort, and with a little bit more luck and guile in attack, we could well have eked out a victory on the night. Well done to all the boys and to Arklow/Avondale and to referee Ciaran Barnes. Our next outing is against Glenealy this Wednesday 25th May.

CAMOGAIOCHT Camogie, like hurling, has a wide range of demanding skills so an early introduction to the game is extremely beneficial to their mastery. It is generally accepted that the playing of matches against outside opposition is an almost necessary means of cultivating and maintaining the interest of modern children in any sport and it is for this reason that Eire Og is participating in a series of u-8 and u-10 blitzes. The Clocha Liatha camogs in these age groups played in their first blitzes of 2016 on Saturday in Avondale. You can imagine the excitement and chatter among these young ladies as they set out for Rathdrum.

They were under the care of Alison Goff, Suzanne Behan and Angela OLeary and were blessed with beautiful sunny weather.
