Club news 27 June 2016

SENIOR FOOTBALL: The senior footballers took a significant scalp in Division 1 of the league on Tuesday. They defeated Blessington in Blessington on the score 1-11 to 1-09. Victory, however, came at a huge cost. Dual player, Stephen Chester Kelly, in the closing minutes suffered a very serious shoulder injury which will have him sidelined for some time. Peter Keane, Justin OBrien, Stephen Kelly, Dominic OReilly and Darren Hayden were particularly prominent in the game.

SENIOR HURLING: The senior hurlers drew, 1-11 each (same score as the footballers in Blessington!), with Avondale in their opening game in the championship in Arklow on Sunday. The unanswerable question is would the balance have been tipped in our favour if the injured Chester could have taken his place on the team. We wish Stephen a speedy recovery both for his own sake and, selfishly, for the hurling and football teams.

FEILE as described by Luke Dorgan who was a member of the team.
On Friday the 24th of June the Eire g Greystones Under 14 Football team headed off to County Kerry to participate in Division 4 of the National File. The team and our three mentors Maurice Prendergast, Peter ONeill and Tadgh Shanahan had put in a lot of hard work and preparation for this special weekend.
We left Greystones on a bus full of craic at 9am on Friday morning and we were heading for Killarney to be hosted by Kilcummin GAA Club! We could not have asked for a better club. The hospitality was fantastic and every host family were extremely welcoming.
I was hosted by the OBrien family of 6 and their own Kilcummin player Killian. They were all very nice and made us feel at home and were very talkative and friendly. They had us up in time every morning with a lovely breakfast cooked for us and hot showers. They got us to the club for our matches even when their own club were not taking part! The whole family even travelled around the county to our matches to support us on a very special weekend.
We qualified top of our group into the Quarterfinals of the cup competition with strong wins over Beaufort and Kilcummin and also a draw against North London our rivals for the weekend!
Our Quarter Final was played in the Dr Crokes ground in Killarney, home of the Gooch where we faced a local Kerry side, Kenmare. We had a tense first half but went in at halftime leading by 2 points thanks to a late goal! The second half we came through strongly thanks to great overall attacking and defending play from everyone!
The Semi final was sure to be a very tough game for us although as we had seen from previous results our Monaghan opposition were a very talented side. We got off to a great start with early scores from the forwards, but Donaghmoyne hit back strong with two quick goals. We were against the wind in the second half so we had it all to do, but another super performance from our back line and goalkeeper kept us ahead and got us into the final against our friends, North London!
In this final game we really showed what we were made of and really put in a very good performance from everyone across the pitch with the game finishing 1-8 to 0-4 in our favour. We were CHAMPIONS!
A very big thanks to our club and mentors once again for working very hard and supplying all the gear and made it a weekend to remember, but especially to our host club Kilcummin and my host family the OBriens. I really enjoyed my weekend with them and appreciate all their support they gave us each day, everyone in the family were so kind and helpful to us all!
Our squad for the weekend was Sean O Neill, Cillian Keane, Neil Browne, Freddy Happonen, Joe Power, Thade Shanahan, Indi Kenny, Eoin O Neill, Conor Fulham, Toby Owens, Jack O Sullivan, Daniel Healy, Joseph Prendergast, Cian Hynes, Luke Dorgan, Fionn Brauner, Oisin Cavanagh, Charlie Leahy, Colm Shortt, Joshua Rush, Aaron Bailey, Patrick Byrne, Oisin Shanahan, Max Scully.

CAMOGAIOCHT The clubs camogs at all levels were in action of late with the u-14s, and u-10s plus u-8s being away in Avondale and Ballinakill respectively while the u-12s and adults were at home to Annacurra and neighbours Kilcoole. The u-12s and u-14s were in the charge of Ciaran Goff and Jim Darcy while the u-10s and u-8s were looked after by Alison Goff, Jill OHerlihy, Bill Malone and Ciaran.
For the u-14s it was a case of life must go on as the game clashed with the Ireland v Sweden feature fixture in Euro 16. Despite this huge counterattraction, a goodly entourage of parents travelled. This the coaches found very encouraging and for which they were very grateful.
The game itself proved to be a very exciting one with play switching between ends in an almost metronomic beat. The hosts stole it in the end by a single goal.
The coaches expressed themselves an-bhuioch to Catherine and Anthony, who managed the Rathdrum team, for their cordial welcome and helpful assistance.

Two evenings later the u-10s and u-8s took off for Ballinakill to take part in a monster camogie blitz. Thankfully, as the location is windswept and can be uncomfortably cold at times, the night was warm and pleasantly balmy. The event which was very well run was thoroughly enjoyed by the young girls. The mentors were very pleased with their charges performance.

Friday it was the u-12s turn and they played host to Annacurra. As was reflected in the final scoreline, 4-3 to 5-0, this was a closely fought goal-fest which kept the many spectators totally absorbed throughout its duration. This team has come on in leaps and bounds and the quality of their camogie on the evening gave great satisfaction to its mentors. Siobhan Darcy was hugely influential at mid-field while Florence Fogarty and Emily Walsh were very solid in defence. Amelia Gulliver proved a handful for the visitors backs.

Tuesday evening the adult team were at home to Kilcoole in a round in the camogie blitz.
The primary function of the competition is to encourage participation in the sport and teams, for the most part, approach the game motivated more by enjoyment than pursuit of victory.
The series has been attention-grabbingly named SUMMER SIZZLERS. The sizzlers has proven to be a well worthwhile undertaking and the Coiste Chondae is to be commended for having come up with the idea.

Eire Og was honoured in having had 2 of its juvenile members, Aisling Goff and Jo Prendergast, chosen to travel to the iconic centre of iomaint (grudgingly admitted!) Nowlan Park as members of the Wicklow NMS selections which had been invited to take part in training sessions on its hallowed turf. It proved to be a memorable experience for the 30 boys and girls involved.
The Liam McCarthy Cup was in attendance and the group got to meet 4 Kilkenny hurling stars Paul Murphy, Colm Fennelly, Richie Reid and Conor Fogarty.
Our club extends a Go raibh maith agaibh to Ronan Keddy, Emer Fahy and the rest of the NMS coiste for having organised the event
