UNDER 16 HURLING In iomint at juvenile level, because of the games minority status within the county, clubs are forced to amalgamate to ensure the viability of competitions. Not at all a desirable state of affairs as it saves the clubs the bother of coaxing the aisy ones, prodding the lazy ones (apologies to Fr. OFlynn) with the result that peripheral players who might later become the backbone of older teams, are lost to the sport.Hopefully it is only a temporary necessity (is the-mother-ofinvention measure) and that many of the clubs involved will soon be standing on their feet.

ire g and Kilcoole have joined together at u-14 and last Thursday travelled to Arklow to play an Arklow Rock/Avondale combination. The Rocks and Avondale have a long history in hurling in the county so the N.E. lads knew, as they set out for the game, that they had a very difficult task on their hands.

The setting for the match was ideal, a beautiful sunny evening and a manicured sod.But the same could not be said for the teams preparation; the boys had not had a game for 2 months so it was not surprising that a ring-rustiness was evident in their play early on. As a result, the opposition was not long in building up a 6 point lead.Eventually the northern lads found their touch and were in a much happier position at the break. However, in the immediate aftermath of the resumption they played to their nadir on the scoreboard with the concession of a couple of goals. At this stage they might have thrown in the towel. But that is not their style.Instead they fought back to the extent that they were in the driving seat for the last quarter.Sadly, their effort was timed and they lost 5-13 to 5-07.

Coaches Gary and Colm were full of praise for their charges performances. They congratulated the opponents on their sportsmanship and prowess and they also had a good word for Matt Dowling who refereed the game sensibly and with a firm hand.

At u-16 the hurling squad includes players from Kilcoole, Na Clocha Liatha and Newtown.Last week this combination took on Michael Dwyers, a district team centred in Kiltegan, in Ballinakill in their final game in the league. The teams record in this competition has given a deal of satisfaction to its mentors in that it has recorded 3 wins, 1 draw and then 2 losses to big hitters Carnew and Br Emmets. As a result it has finished in the top 4.The northern district squad emerged winners against Michael Dwyers on the score 4-16 to 2-05 in what was, despite what the score might suggest, a closely contested match. The difference lay in the superior ability of the tuaisceartaigh forwards to turn their opportunities into scores.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALL:Wednesday night last saw our u-14 footballers take on St Nicholas, their fellow Cill Mantin File representatives in Ciarra, at home in the 1stround of the championship.ire g lost by a point but they just could as easily have won by 5 or 6.The ball spent much of its time in Greystones hands in close proximity to the visitors goal.Possession may be 9 points of the law but it is of little value in a game if it cannot be turned into scores and on Wednesday ire g were singularly unable to do so.The forwards uncharacteristically sent ball after ball wide from advantageous positions, shot for goal when points were for the taking and passed when having a shot would have been a better option. The team has been riding high and it is expected that this loss will act as a wake-up call and will stiffen its resolve for the remainder of the campaign.
