ACADEMY: Saturday mornings are Academy mornings in ire g between 11.00 a.m. and midday. On these mornings 4-6 year old boys and girls are introduced to the challenges and delights of both hurling and Gaelic football in a child friendly ambience of encouragement and understanding. No matter what one’s judgement on Gaelic games as spectacles is one cannot deny but that as vehicles for the promotion of athleticism and game awareness they more than hold their own with other team sports. Further, the variety of the skill-sets developed in the playing of Gaelic sports is such that practitioners, e.g. Lucy Mulhall of Tinahely, captain of the Irish Ladies Rugby 7s team, in general find little difficulty adapting to the disciplines of other sports.

A propos, a little bit of history was made recently when Niall Barry joined the Academy. He represents the 4th generation of the Barry family to be involved with the G.A.A. in Greystones. Niall is the grandson of the Uachtarn incumbent, Ray, and son of Johnny who played for the club from child to man. His great-grandfather John was hugely influential in ensuring that the old pitch remained in the club’s possession when the Burnaby estate was sold off in the 70s.

CAMGAOCHT With teams now being fielded at various age levels, camogie is beginning to establish a significant presence within ire g.

U-14 Our u-14s had their 1st ever competitive game last Friday week. They played Aughrim in the league in Ballinaclash. While Aughrim deservedly emerged with the spoils the ire g girls did not make it easy for their experienced opponents. The Greystones cailn put up a stout resistance and battled hard to the final whistle.

Team: Faith Brock, Siobhn Darcy, Ailbhe Coughlan, Caoimhe Ryan, Laura Parkinson (capt.), Keela Keogh, Eva Sterritt, Aisling Goff, Emma Darcy, Ella Keane, Annie Webster, Niamh Booth, Kate Burns, Lucy Daly, Charlotte Norton and Florence Fogarty.

On the same night our u12s travelled to Glenealy to participate in a Go-Games blitz hosted by the home club. Teams from Br Emmets and Kilcoole also travelled. A great night of camogie ensued in an upliftingly sporting atmosphere.

ANGELA’S (not Charlie’s!) ANGELS: About 2 years ago a group of mothers and their friends began to gather together on Thursday evenings at 8pm in ire g grounds for a fun exercise session under the leadership of Angela O’Leary. Despite some of them never having had a camn in their hands the ladies decided to make camogie the focus of their training. Numbers grew and competence improved to the point where it was felt that the time had come to measure their ability against an outside opposition and last week they played a team from Kilcoole composed mainly of TY girls. The awakening was rude, the Kilcoolers led them a merry dance! Nevertheless our ladies thoroughly enjoyed the experience. T filte roimh new members.

PEIL NA gCAILN: ire g is now fielding teams at u-12, u-14 and u-16 and hopefully will soon be adding a ladies team to its ranks. At the beginning of the year there was some trepidation among the mentors about the club being able to field a team at u-12. Such fears soon proved groundless and the numbers at this level, albeit representing a wide range of abilities, have since swelled to 40.

The u-16s had their 1st outing last week when they were at home to Carnew in the league. Our girls proved to be much superior and one had to have sympathy for the Carnew squad and its mentors who had travelled from the far south of the county. The visitors took their defeat in a good spirit and seemed not to be too downhearted. We wish them all the best in their future games.

The u-14s played Valleymount at home in the 1st round of the 2016 league. ire g registered a 4-7 to 3-5 win in what proved to be a very enjoyable and competitive contest. Ascendency passed rapidly between the teams over the hour. What must surely be judged the critical moment of the match occurred on the three-quarter hour mark when the game was finely balanced. Na Clocha Liatha hearts missed a beat as a Valleymount ‘screamer’ seemed on its way to the net. Thankfully its destination proved to be the crossbar. If it had gone in??

Ciara McDonnell is worthy of special mention for having bravely volunteered for goal-keeping duties. Iseult Brosnan and Sophie Fitzgerald held the upper hand in the centre of the field and Eva Megannety at centre-forward scored 4 points from play. Emer ‘Tap’ Fawcett, Andrea Hanlon, Alice O’Neill and Ciara Finn defended well.

IOMINT U-14 ire g/Kilcoole 2-08, Br Emmets 5-05

Spectators were treated to a great game of hurling with some excellent scores from Joe Prendergast, Thade Shanahan (2 long range points from centre back), Luke Dorgan & Ben O’ Neill. Great saves from Michael Gray and great defence in particular by Ollie Newsome & Sean McCormack, ably abetted by Charlie Traynor, Eoin Byrne & Aaron Keddy. Daniel Healy, Cillian Keane & Colm Shortt showed their speed and cleverness of pass on a number of occasions, while Fionn Mansfield & Shane Collins put in a great effort against a strong Bray defence & goalkeeper. Kyle Quinn and Elliot Hatton completed the squad on the night.

A narrow defeat, but the mentors were very happy with the effort & skill put in by all the lads for the 60 minutes. Maith sibh a bhuachaill!

U16 HURLING: In the 1st outing of the 2016 season the ire g/Kilcoole combination had an exciting 1 point victory over St Pats (3-10 to 4-06) in Kilcoole. The north Wicklow lads’ play was peppered with an early-season rustiness which had them in a precarious position for much of the game. A strong finish carried them over the line. The team’s scores came from Shaun Cranley, Joe McDonald, Eoin Dorgan and Glen Dunne.

Oisin Curry was sound as always in goal. Marwan Machalaani & Brian Shortt were immense at full back & centre back, very well backed up by Shane Ryan, Denis Burke, Glen Ryder & Conor Odlum. Luke Thompson & Leo Hanney were up against a very strong Pats midfield, but unsurprisingly, they competed tigerishly all night and more than held their own. Thomas Moorehouse & Fionn Mansfield completed the forward line and put in a great display.
Well done to all the lads and to St Pats for a sporting game and to referee Ian Culbert.
