Club Notes 22/02/16

In the matter of their sale, hot cakes have nothing on the tickets for the ire g Greystones Annual Dinner Dance in Greystones Golf Club with music by ‘A Great Bunch of Lads’. Act now or you might find yourself on the night of March 11th at home twiddling your thumbs, or worse, forced to watch the Late Late Show and regretting the long-fingering of your purchase of Dinner Dance tickets (35 euro) available from Daniel O’Connor.

The nos. which came out of the hat at last week’s, Monday 15th, Lotto draw were 7,8,15,22 numbers which were not favoured greatly by punters and hence there were no winners even at Match 3. The prize for this week’s draw, Monday 22nd, was 5400 euro. At the time of writing the result is not known.

Have you returned your monies and ticket stubs for the National GAA Draw? It is imperative that you do so as soon as possible. Much of the club’s peace of mind rides on the success of this draw as it is essentially a win-win project. Thus it involves no administrative costs and all monies collected go straight into the straitened ire g coffers.

It may surprise you to know that before a sliothar is struck or a ball is kicked ire g is liable for close to 10K euro for the registration of teams, insurance etc.

The 16 clubs involved in the Leinster Hurling League have been divided into 4 groups of 4, and ire g has been bracketed with Brownstown of Westmeath, St Marys of Leixlip and Parnells of Dublin. It is certain that these teams will provide stiff opposition. Our opening game is at home in Na Clocha Liatha on Saturday at 3 p.m. We concede home advantage in the other games.

The GAA is actively engaged in trying to sort out the dilemma of the Club v county demands on players. This problem will be given an airing at this year’s Comhdhil in Mount Wolseley in Carlow at the week-end. Eoghan Fearghal, Uachtarn CLG, sees the club as the very foundation of the GAA and is rightly worried that in many counties the clubs’ playing functions are being undermined by the blanket restriction placed by managers on players on county panels. Further he is concerned that the peripheral players in these squads are, as a result, not getting games at either county or club level.

This problem is very much at ire g’s doorstep as with up to 10 of our players included in county panels the constraints placed on their playing with the club could lead to our having to play league games with very understrength teams which would greatly militate against our retaining our status in these competitions in both hurling and football. Incidentally our senior footballers have been drawn against St Pats of Wicklow in the 1st round of the senior championship.

COMHGIRDEACHAS to ire g minor footballers Eoin McTeague, Adam O’Shea and Cian O’Flaherty who were members of the county minor panel that defeated Laois 2-7 to 0-9 in the Leinster League.
