STRICTLY EIRE OG Friday night last was Strictly Come Dancing night and Oh! What a night it was, Oh! What a night. Any doubts one might have of this assessment would have been dispersed by a vox pop of the attendees exiting the Killiney Castle hotel after the event. This would have found a universal accord among them of it having been a highly enjoyable spectacle.

Each pair of dancers who took part brought its own claque and these groups of followers cheered and hurrahed as their favourites manoeuvred athletically through their demanding dance routines. However they reserved the most vocal of their responses for the scoring of the 3 judges. They had much to cheer about. There was a lack of transparency and openness in the appointment of 2 of the judges suspected political interference! (where have we heard that before?) Anto Byrne and Brendan Cuddihy whose knowledge of the finer points of Dance is open to question so it is highly likely that personal bias coloured their judgements. Were the marks given to the wielders of the caman a tad inflated?

Who would have believed that such a disparate group could have attained such lightness of foot- particularly those of figure which could scarcely be designated as svelte such accuracy of timing and adroitness of movement in a mere 6 weeks. Well done to their coaches whose task was no doubt rendered so much easier by the enthusiasm and the innate abilities of their subjects. The aptitude of some of the males, not overly familiar with formal dances, to learn the arts of shimmying and shaking could no doubt be explained by their having honed the basics of such bodily dexterities on the sporting field.

While Strictly Come Dancing is primarily a fund-raising project it must be admitted that it is one of the most pleasant ways of doing so. The stage presentation was highly professional: the lighting, the music, the videos which drew gales of laughter and the costume and the make-up which evoked the spirit of the eras from which the individual dances emerged. Helen Smullen who was coiffeuse to all but one of the ladies captured, in the hairdos, the moods of the dances and their times. The all-round attention to detail was evidenced in the quality of the entertainment and the vibrancy of the production.

A huge amount of effort and not a little investment goes into staging a Strictly so it takes a person with entrepreneurial skills to bring it to fruition. Thankfully these are possessed by our Cathaoirleach John Keane. The club is deeply cognisant of its indebtedness to the dancers and their sponsors and to Go Gym who were the main sponsors of the night.

WEEKLY LOTTO: The winning numbers from Monday, 13 draw were 7, 13, 14 and 22. Three people came very close to scooping the 8,600 jackpot as they matched 3 of the numbers. They share 200.

FEILE FUNDRAISER: As you know our U14 Footballers have qualified to represent Wicklow at this months feile in Cork and Kerry. To offset the expense of this, they are holding a concert with the musician Paul J Mills at the Glen of the Downs Golf Club on Friday the 18th. Tickets are 30 which include food and wine. You can get them at the door or from eireogfeile@gmail.com

PEIL: Our Junior A footballers had their 1st outing in the championship against St Pats in Rathnew on Sunday morning. The final score, 2-14 to 1-09, does not really do our lads efforts justice. Behind 1-07 to 0-5 entering the 2nd half they fought back bravely to be just 2 points behind late in the game. And at this stage the possibility of drawing level seemed to be on the cards. Unfortunately they fell victim to a late flurry of St Pats scores. Team: Eoin English, Matt Maguire, Mick Walsh, Dermot Blake, Gavin Parslow, Leon Browne, Mick Dunne, Anto Byrne, Dave Behan, James Wood, James Cranley, Eoin McTeague, Brian Lawless, James Smullen, Cian OFlaherty. Subs.: Mark OToole and Glenn Hayden. Next outing Friday next 17th against Bray Emmets.
