U13 camogie girls fall just short: Being the season of finals, our U13s headed to Ballinakill hoping to retain the U13 shield won in 2016. One has to wonder what the county board allocates the spending of the Ballinakill budget on but it certainly isnt keeping the grass cut to an acceptable level for hurling or camogie. The conditions on Saturday last were the same for both teams and whilst the conditions had no bearing on the result, they certainly did on the quality of the game. The game is unlimited substitutions so all 18 girls were playing the 13 aside game, with younger players rolling in and out at regular intervals.

The wind, as it is inclined to be in Ballinakill, was also a major factor on the game. The Eire og girls played with the wind in their faces in a first half that was dominated by Glenealy. A massive effort by Lucy in goal, supported by the tenacious fullback line ofEmily and Bryana withstood all attacks, carrying the ball into the strong wind when possible and linking with Siobhan, Grace and Amelia in front of them. Siobhan and Grace in particular cleared numerous ball. Aisling and Ellie battled hard in midfield and all the forwards worked their socks off to try battle the elements and a skilful Glenealy team. However due to the defensive pressure being exerted and the negative effects of playing with a strong wind the first score tooks its time in arriving. With 20 mins of the 25min half played, a clearance was intercepted on the left and the Glenealy midfielder, headed in field and struck a beautiful score. The eire og girls kept the pressure on and the half finished with the single score. 0.1 v 0.0.

The second half started with disaster, Glenealy broke forward and the ball found its way to the net. Soon after a free to Glenealy and 5 mins in to the second half, 1.2 v 0.0. Siobhan, Grace and Aisling pushed forward with renewed vigour. We started to play the game with winds at our back in the Glenealy half of the field. Free from Siobhan, got us off the mark. Next a ball broke to Ella on edge of square and just went wide. Siobhan carried from 30 metres out to within 10 and lined up a shot at goal but a last gasp Glenealy defenders hurl, half hooked and the ball went high and over the bar. Molly, Maya, Orla, Tara, Nessa and Hazel battled to keep the ball in the Eire Og half. When it did go into the danger area, our captain Emily was quick to ball, claiming and feeding out to Ellie, Grace and Amelia who brought the ball from defence into attack again and again. Kate, Sarah and Ella had chances in front of goal but a combination of the Glenealy goalkeeper and excellent defending kept us out. The ball breaks to Meabh who jinks from right to her left, 20 metres out and shoots. The ball agonisingly goes just to the left and into the side netting. 5 mins to go1.2 v 0.2. Aisling works her way up right wing and shoots from a tight angle. Hanging in the air it lands on the roof of the net. 1.2 v 0.3. Down to 2,two mins remaining. Glenealy girls to their credit dug deep and broke out and up the field to relieve the pressure. An exciting finish to a fiercely competitive game by the Eire Og girls who never gave up but Glenealy held on to deservedly win. Very proud of all our girls on Saturday and throughout the year. Their attitude is second to none and the ability to keep going and never give up comes through again and again. A credit to themselves, their family and their club.

Many thanks to Con Keddy, the referee and Tracey McCabe for co-ordinating the blitz and finals day.
