Minor Boys Football: Blessington were pushed all the way on Monday night at home to Éire Óg in this Minor football ‘A’ championship game with a goal from Blues substitute Oisin O’Neill wrapping up the match in injury time.

Blessington led 1-8 to 0-3 at half-time, the goal coming after 12 minutes from full-forward Brian Richardson who was first to react when corner-forward Thomas Walsh’s shot came back of the Éire Óg crossbar.

The Greystones side were playing into a strong wind in the first half, however, with Oisin Murphy and Gearoid Murphy in midfield, they enjoyed plenty of possession but found scores hard to come by against a well-drilled Blues defence with centre back Adam Smith to the fore.

Down eight points at the break, Éire Óg outscored Blessington by 2-6 to 2-5 in an exciting second half, where the visitors twice reduced the deficit to four points.

With 15 minutes to go the Blues lead was out to nine points thanks in the main to a second Brian Richardson goal, where just previous Éire Óg forward Corey O’Brien had pointed when a goal looked certain.

However, the goals did come for Éire Ó. First, Oisin Murphy set up Darragh Shanahan, and a couple of minutes later Darragh Shanahan in turn set up Alex Dale.

The Blues can thank their corner-forward Thomas Walsh for then lifting the siege as he kicked three points in a row to help restore a four-point lead, and then, in injury-time, came the clinching goal from Oisin O’Neill.
