Club notes 18/04/16

SYMPATHY The coiste of Eire Og at its monthly meeting passed a vote of sympathy to club President Patsy Vickers and to the Vickers family on the death of Patsy’s brother Tom in Chelmsford. Ar dheis D go raibh anam Tom.

COMHGIRDEACHAS to our u-14 footballers who, by their defeat of Blessington in the semi-final of the Cill Mantin File in Ballinakill have earned the privilege of representing Wicklow in the National File which is being hosted jointly by Corcaigh and Ciarra.

The format of the File in Ballinakil was that of a 15-a-side blitz with games lasting half an hour. The competition was run over 2 days at the week-end with the quarter finals and semi-finals being played on the Sunday. On the way to the quarter finals ire g defeated Michael Dwyers (Kiltegan), St. Pats and Tinahely. Tinahely proved to be a particularly doughty opposition and the ire g lads had to be at their very best to see off their challenge.

First up on Sunday morning were famed Rathnew but thankfully our boys proved more than equal to the task. 28 Greystones players saw action over the tournament.

The final of the competition was played last Friday in the splendidly appointed grounds of the Blessington club. ire g’s opponents were St Nicolas from the west of the county who had defeated Tinahely in the other semi-final. St Nicks really put it up to our lads. Greystones were 3 points in arrears at the break, 1-01 to 1-04 not a very comfortable position with only 15 minutes to be played and to say we were relieved to come away with a 4-02 to 2-06 win would be somewhat of an understatement.

The management of Maurice Prendergast, Tadhg Shanahan and Peter O’Neill extend a sincere go raibh maith agaibh to the soccer and rugby clubs for their co-operation with respect to the availability of dual players.

WEEKLY LOTTO: It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The club lotto wasnt won again last night. The winning numbers were 17, 21, 25 and 30. Surprisingly, nobody managed to even match three numbers. Next weeks jackpot is 7,200, the law of averages dictates that it will be won imminently, so buy your tickets at www.eireoggreystones.com

STRICTLY COME EIRE OG: Want to have fun, meet new friends and help raise funds for the club? Strictly ire g will take place in the Fitzpatrick Hotel, Killiney on 10th June. We still need a few dancers (especially men!) to complete the couples. Youll receive full training and be supported at every stage. If interested, call John at 086 8280261

SAILING SUCCESS: Well done to Shane MacCarthy and team mate Andy Davis who were winners of the GP14 class in the World Sailing Championship recently held in Barbados. Shane played for ire g at u-10 and u-12 and is brother of Conor who represented the club at all grades to senior.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Friday night of the same week-end saw our seniors suffer a disappointing defeat, 0-6 to 1-11, to Blessington in their 4thouting in Div 1 of the Campus Oil League. Despite a 1sthalf performance which lacked vibrancy ire g were still well in the hunt 0-3 to 0-6 at the break so followers nurtured the hope that the interval pep talk would help the team shake off the shackles of its lethargy. However, a Blessington goal early in the 2ndperiod proved an antidote to any energising half-time words and severely dented the morale of the team. The gloom of defeat was lifted somewhat by the sparkling performance of the full-back line of John Deeney, Jack Tanner and Matt Maguire and the return of Karl Manahan (0-3). Greystones immigrant David Behan also did well against his former team mates.

DIVISION 3 Our Junior As made the long journey through white-speckled hills to Hollywood on Sunday morning. It turned out to be a fruitful one with their registering a 1-9 to 0-11 win over the locals. As one might suspect from the score the game generated more than a little excitement with the last 10 minutes proving to be particularly nerve racking. With 3 minutes of normal time to go Greystones were nail-clingingly hanging on to a 1 point lead, the nails slipped and the initiative shifted the Westerners way and on the stroke of 60 minutes they breached the ire g defence to score the equalising point. 2 minutes of stoppage time to be played, sufficient time for that match-winning score. Would our lads wilt under the pressure was the question on the lips of the travelling support? Oh you of little faith!Did you not know that this team was made of stern stuff. Its response was immediate. From Eoin English’s well-directed kick-out the ball was channelled to Jonathan Groomes in the corner who guided it unerringly between the Hollywood posts to the sound of the full time whistle. This victory was forged on a very solid and parsimonious full-back line and was especially pleasing to the team’s management because of the resilience shown by their charges and also because it was achieved in the absence of some of the more established players.

Scorers:James Woods 1-1, Willie O’Hagan 0-3, Jonathan Groomes 0-3, Dave Behan 0-1, James Cranley 0-1.

COMHBHRN The club extends its condolences to Mikie Ryan and to the Ryan family on the death of Mikie’s grandfather, Jimmy. Mikie plays hurling for ire g. Go raibh leaba i measc na naomh ag Jimmy.
