Club Notes 23/03/15

DINNER DANCE Sorry! You are too late! Friday Night’s Éire Óg Dinner Dance in Greystones Golf Club is a sell-out (returns only). Patrons will be sitting to dinner at 8pm sharp after a champagne reception and will be tripping the light fantastic thereafter to music initially by Revival and then D J ing ’til late. Ag súil le h-oíche aerach spraoiúil.

PEIL Friday night last our footballers took on neighbours Kilmac in a practice in Greystones. Such games can be productive but on this occasion it would be hard to see what value it had for Éire Óg other than giving the players a break from their usual training routine. The match was run over 3 periods of 20 minutes with the Éire Óg squad being chopped and changed throughout so it was difficult for the team to develop any degree of cohesive action. Thus, from the point of view of assessing players it was doubtful if the encounter produced many insights for the management. The Éire Óg play was riddled with the type of handling and positioning errors that would have supporters pulling out their hair. What a salutary lesson would there be to be had for our lads in a video of the match!

On the other hand the Kilmac team underwent very few changes over the hour and this showed in its modus operandi. The visitors demonstrated a great understanding between each other, passed accurately and put together some excellent movements.

IOMÁINT One was never more prepared for the recording of the ins and outs of a game as for Saturday’s Div 3 Leinster Hurling League home game against Naomh Moninne from Louth – sharpened pencil, notebook and a stopwatch to chronicle the scoring sequence all at the ready. A situation so unusual ( there were to be no concessions to the imagination) that it was bound not to have the intended outcome. And it didn’t! The match did not take place, Greystones were given a walkover.

There had been a suspicion for some time that this might indeed be the case as Naomh Moninne had been well beaten by the other teams in the group and these latter had, in turn, been beaten by Éire Óg. Why would these hurlers spend approx 2 hours travelling from Dundalk to almost certainly suffer a comprehensive defeat in Na Clocha Liatha? There would assuredly be nothing in it for the long term cause of hurling in their club. With the afternoon having been so fine and ideal for iomáint there was some disappointment among our hurlers on hearing that the game had been called off. Brendan Cuddihy had texted in very good time that there would be no game. But there are those who do not read text messages!

However is olc an ghaoth nach séideann maitheas éigin (it’s an ill wind…) and those who had travelled to the field got to enjoy the wonderful sunshine in the beautiful setting that is the Éire Óg grounds and its surrounds.

In the play-off section of the league the hurlers’ opponents will be their counterparts from Kilkenny and one fears for our fate if county duties strip the squad of its stronger players.

COMHGÁIRDEACHAS Congratulations to our Rúnaí Daniel English and to his wife Catherine on the birth of their daughter Jessica. Beannacht Dé leí agus faoi coimirce Mhuire í i gcónaí.

COMHBHRÓN The Éire Óg club extends its sincerest sympathies to Shirley Meyer, wife of Mike (spinologist), and to the Curley family on the death of their mother Evelyn. Mike lends his expertise to our senior footballers. Ar dheis Dé go raibh anam Evelyn.
