Club Notes 23/2/15

PEIL SINSEAR

On Friday next at 7.30pm our senior footballers are at home to Blessington in their opening match in Div 1A of the Campus Oil Football League (Referee Anthony Nolan). This is the first real challenge that they will have faced in the present season (practice games are deceptive in that they are usually played at a much lower intensity) and as such will offer an authentic measure of where the squad stands for the new season. The lads have been training well for some time and will, no doubt, give a good account of themselves so this encounter should prove to be an intriguing contest. Why not put on those cosy long johns and head down to the Mill Road on Friday evening? The team would greatly appreciate your support. Níl amhras ar bith ach go mba fiú duit an turas do dhéanamh, you’ll find that it will be well worth the effort.

It is hoped that James Leonard will not be seeking parental leave from the team for the game. James became the father of a son, Davin, at the weekend.
Davin has been described as having the attributes of a potential footballer and all in Éire Óg are delighted to hear this. Comhgáirdeachas to James and his wife Orla agus beannacht Dé ar an leanbh.

As we are on about football one feels compelled to refer to that really excellent game between UCC and DCU in the extra-time Sigerson Cup final played in the Mardyke on Saturday. The match was level at least 9 times and was played at a high tempo throughout. The teams comprised delightfully svelte athletes who spared nothing in honest endeavour while showing wonderful athleticism and a high level of ball skills. In short a demonstration of what a great spectacle Gaelic football can be (TG4 Player for proof). The game had a local interest in that Pauline Chambers, the grandmother of Conor McGraynor who scored the spectacular last-minute winning point, lives in Greystones.

IOMÁINT

The hurlers also take to the competitive field at the week-end. They take on Corra Choill of Kildare, now being trained by Martin Storey, in the Leinster League in Greystones at 4.30pm on Saturday. They, too, would not spurn your support. The squad has not been idle and last Saturday, Valentine’s Day, the players took time off from their protestations of amour to play a team from Maynooth in a friendly. The game while not being of vintage quality did fulfil its purpose, that of giving the mentors the chance of casting an eye over their squads and that of awakening the players to the reality of the impending season. The task of keeping order was in the hands of well known referee Ciarán ‘Mossie’ Gaskin.

The team management thanks Tom Enright for providing the biscuits for the post-match cup of ‘cha’ but feel he might consider an upgrade in their quality for the next occasion!!

JUVENILE AND CAMOGIE TRAINING

For the next 3 Monday evenings, 23rd Feb, 2nd and 9th March, Dublin hurler Niall Corcoran will be conducting hurling training for the u-14 and u-16 hurlers. All our juvenile hurling coaches who are in a position to do so are strongly encouraged to avail of the opportunity of watching him in action.

Camogie training continues on Saturday mornings at 11am under the supervision of Maeve Webster, Ciarán Ryan, Mark Barry and Ciarán Goff. The sessions are aimed at the u-8, u-10 and u-12 age groups and new members are very welcome. Hurleys and helmets are available for those who would like to give the sport a try. Parents can get further information from Ciarán Goff at 087-6849628.
