IOMAINTAs part of the u-9/u-11 Autumn hurling leagues Eire Og hosted the Cuala club (2016 senior hurling champions i mBla Cliath) on Sunday morning. The football mentors took advantage of the occasion to play big-ball matches between teams at the same age levels. There was a big overlap of players between the two sports so by the end of the football much of the taispeach (exuberance) had been knocked out of the lads and they returned to their parents happier but hopefully calmer children.

The games were played in a spirit of Give Respect and Receive Respect with the emphasis being on participation and enjoyment. However, for boys in particular, the latter quality necessarily includes an element of competitiveness so even though the ref does not keep a score, they do.

U-9Dean Barry and Sean Ryan, promoted from the u-8 ranks, proved to be well capable of holding their own at u-9.In a game in which the quality of hurling was surprisingly high the performances of Paddy Marrinan, Cillian Goff, Ryan Ovenden and Donagh Mellet stood out.

U-11This was a game to warm the cockles of hurling hearts. The engagement was total but honest from the off, the standard of the hurling was high and the bravery the sport of hurling demands was much in evidence.Hugh OCarroll with a display of determination and courage set an example for his colleagues and merited him the plaudit of MOTM.

Uachtaran, Danny Hatton, was at hand to see his grandson Mikey carry on the hurling tradition that Danny inherited with Kilcoole.Daragh McGowan, Christy Connors, James ODowd and Gearoid Coughlan also caught the eye.

Go raibh maith agat to Daniel Healy for undertaking refereeing duties

Everyone was pleased to see Sean Meyler, who took ill during the previous week, among the spectators. We wish Sean a speedy recovery.

The mentors were delighted with the show of loyalty by the players who came from their other various activities, soccer and rugby training etc., to take part in the games.

IOMAINT (u 14 championship, ar lean)The North District (Eire Og/Kilcoole plus) played Avondale in the final of the u-14 B Hurling Championship on Saturday 15thOctober in St Pats grounds in Dunbur.Avondale won by 5 points, not considered a huge gap in hurling, on the score 5-03 to 2-07.Not a result one would have envisaged 4 minutes from the throw-in for by that stage Avondale had 2 goals (one straight from the throw-in) ahead. But at this stage Eoin Dorgan, with roots in Christy Ring country (Cloyne), came into the picture and brought the north side into contention with 3 points, 2 from frees. These were quickly neutralised but idir eatarthu Luke tapped over his 4th.

Exchanges were more or less even from that to the break which saw a further Avondale goal being balanced out by points from Luke Dorgan, Daniel Healy and Thade Shanahan.

Shortly after the break Luke embarked on a spectacular solo run which ended with his driving the sliothar to the back of the oppositions net.

Besides reducing the Avondale lead to 2 points, the method of its execution gave a huge lift to the North and its supporters.Unfortunately it was not too long before the wind was knocked out of the North District sails when a descending shot deceived Shane Collins in the goals and dropped over the line. A Joe Prendergast goal temporarily lent hope to the Norths cause but this was soon dashed by an answering goal from Avondale.

Club Uachtarain, Danny Hatton(incumbent) and Patsy Vickers were party to widely contrasting happenings of late.Danny on the one hand experienced the happiness of having reached lifes bitter-sweet milestone of four score years while Patsy (who could give Danny a few years) was subjected to the anguish of having his home burgled while he was in the house.

Comhgairdeachas to Danny. We all wish him and his wife, Marie, many more years in which to enjoy their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.Beannacht De oraibh beirt agus gurab fada buan sibh.

Violation of ones home, particularly as one gets on in years, is very traumatic but Patsy is a man of known resilience and, hopefully, will soon overcome any of the psychological ill effects of his unhappy experience
